Panel Discussion: Can Malaysia Do Better to Be the Next Connectivity and Data Center Hub?

Mr. Weng-Yew Wong, Managing Director of Open DC and Member of the Board of Management at DE-CIX Malaysia, participated in a panel discussion titled “Can Malaysia Do Better to Be the Next Connectivity and Data Center Hub?” He shared several key points:

  • Expanding Johor Bahru’s Connectivity Landscape: As a key player in the Johor market, Open DC and DE-CIX Malaysia are committed to revolutionising the region’s connectivity landscape. Our mission extends beyond traditional services, focusing on creating a dynamic meeting point for connectivity providers, hosts, and content providers through our internet exchange.

  • A Crucial Meeting Point: The internet exchange serves as a vital hub where diverse players converge, fostering a robust environment for seamless connectivity. This collaborative space is essential for enhancing Malaysia’s current connectivity scenario, where more meeting points are needed. Currently, the major connectivity hubs are in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya, leaving a significant gap in other regions.

  • Addressing the Connectivity Gap: To emerge as a regional hub, Malaysia must establish additional meeting points where content providers can effectively connect with their audience. Open DC and DE-CIX Malaysia propose developing the Johor Bahru interconnection point to attract more players to the southern region, facilitating local interconnections and reducing dependency on Kuala Lumpur and Singapore for traffic routing.

  • The Vision for Johor Bahru: The vision for the Johor Bahru interconnection point is to create a significant improvement in the industry. By encouraging more players to interconnect locally, they aim to streamline traffic flow, reduce latency, and enhance overall connectivity. This initiative will bolster Johor Bahru’s position in the connectivity landscape and contribute to Malaysia’s goal of becoming a regional connectivity hub.
